Lead Scientist for The Nature Conservancy

M. Sanjayan is the Lead Scientist for The Nature Conservancy. He helps provide the scientific underpinning for the strategic direction of the organization and ensures that new projects are properly communicated and assimilated. His studies are focused around issues such as sustainability, human well-being, Africa, conservation and wildlife ecology.

Sanjayan’s work has received extensive print media coverage, including features in Vanity Fair, National Geographic Adventure, Outside, and The New York Times. He is a frequent guest on NBC’s Today Show and has appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman where he discussed global climate change and the future of the planet. Sanjayan has also co-hosted documentaries for the Discovery Channel (Mysteries of the Shark Coast, Expedition Alaska & Powering the Future), BBC (Wildlife in a War-Zone), and National Geographic TV (Earth Report 2009).

His scientific work has been published in journals including Science, Nature, and Conservation Biology, and he is co-editor of the book Connectivity Conservation. He is a frequent speaker at internationally recognized events including The World Forum on Sustainable Development, International Women’s Forum and TED Global 2010.

Sanjayan, who holds a doctorate from the University of California, Santa Cruz, has a research faculty appointment with the Wildlife Program at the University of Montana. He is also a Catto Fellow with the Aspen Institute.

Sanjayan’s passions outside of work include trekking in Africa and fly-fishing in Western Montana.
