From humble beginnings as the son of a bricklayer, Bernhard has become an established member on the world golf circuit and is well respected by fellow professionals, press and public alike.
Although he turned professional in 1972, it was in the early 80's when Bernhard really began to make his mark in the world of golf. He won the European Order of Merit in 1981, then again in 1984. In 1985, he achieved every golfer's dream by winning the coveted US Masters title. In 1993 he entered the select group of double major winners with a second victory at The Masters.
In the same year as his first Masters victory, Bernhard was a member of the Ryder Cup team at the Belfry which gave Europe its first victory in 28 years. Two years later Bernhard formed part of the historic European team that beat America on their own soil for the first time in 60 years.
Bernhard's role in in the winning European Ryder Cup team 2001 was hugely significant. He was participating in his 10th Ryder Cup and bringing vast amounts of experience and talent to the team. Claiming 3.5 points out of 4 there is no doubt that Bernhard's gritty determination and ultimate desire for perfection complemented his role as European Ryder Cup Captain 2004 which was a demonstration of perfect leadership, sportsmanship and camaraderie. This lead to the biggest win ever in the history of the Ryder Cup with an unprecedented score of 18 - 9.
Bernhard has won over 75 tournaments on all continents of the world in his career so far, an incredible record matched only by a handful of golfers. He is without a doubt one of the most consistent and resilient professionals in golf. His name is synonymous with quality and he is certainly one of golf's true gentlemen.
